Gabions in Wetlands

Wetlands are vital to our natural environment. They reduce the impact from storm damage and flooding, absorb pollutants and improve water quality. They are important to biodiversity providing a natural habitat for animals and plants. Many contain a wide diversity of life, including birds, fish, frogs, reptiles and mammals. Most of these species rely on wetlands for their survival.

Gabions are widely used in the rehabilitation and construction of new waterways including wetlands, creeks and detention/retention basins. Gabions not only stabilise soil and control erosion but the permeable nature of the rock and wire encourages vegetation growth and creates hidden spaces for aquatic creatures to live and breed.

Prospect Contractors have been the installers of Gabions in many new wetlands in South Australia.
