10 Gabion Retaining Wall Ideas

Updated: Mar 26

From small areas to be retained in your backyard to areas that require a large amount of extensive retaining, Gabions are the ideal solution to soil stabilisation and erosion control.

There are many advantages to using Gabions for retaining purposes. As well as being able to accommodate differential settlement, Gabion retaining walls are permeable and environmentally friendly. They are also cost effective and look great. These are just some of the benefits!

Prospect Contractors have been installing Gabion and Rockweld retaining walls locally in South Australia and on larger, civil projects around Australia for over 20 years. We install only quality assured Maccaferri and Geofabric products and our installers are trained in accordance with the Maccaferri guidelines for Gabion installation, ensuring consistent, outstanding quality of the finished product.

'Hand-Faced" Rockweld Gabion Retaining Wall

Maccaferri Gabion Walls

Traditional wire Gabion baskets by Maccaferri, are the most suitable type of Gabions for retaining walls, and are laced together to create what is known as a Mass Gravity Wall. The stability of a mass gravity retaining wall relies upon the structural integrity of the Gabions (their ability to hold together under load, including their own weight, and support and stabilise unstable soil). All wire Gabions are 'hand-faced' which means we hand place the flat face of each rock against the sides of the baskets. This minimises gaps and creates a flat, uniform finish which also reduces pressure on the walls of the baskets.

As no footing or curing is required, they can be installed quickly and cost effectively. The durability of the PoliMac® coated Maccaferri baskets, when installed by qualified and experience installers also ensure that the retaining wall will be around for a lifetime.

Rockweld Gabion Walls

Prospect Contractors also install low Rockweld Gabion retaining walls in areas that are suitable. The rigid, galvanised steel mesh panels are laced together and stabilised with posts into the ground. They create a slimmer profile and are used for more aesthetic purposes in areas that don’t require as much stabilisation. They are not recommended in areas that have water flow.
